5 Differences Between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church

probably the biggest and [most] obvious difference between the orthodox church and the Roman Catholic church is that the orthodox church doesn’t have a pope figure, so for Roman Catholics the Pope is [not] only Supreme that is to say he has immediate jurisdiction in every church in the whole world [but] he is also infallible under certain Circumstances the Orthodox Church doesn’t agree with either one of those doctrines We don’t see any one [bishop] as being supreme throughout the whole world nor do we see any of them as being preserved by God Infallibly when they speak on faith and morals we have essentially a college of bishops And they make decisions together and they typically will [have] a patriarch or primate with another title maybe who? Presides at their meetings, but is not the absolute ruler of them all so for us all bishops are fundamentally equal Even if some might have [a] little bit more positional authority than others none of them has this kind of theological place that the pope does for the Roman Catholic church For the orthodox kids our children are fully included Roman Catholic children are baptized [but] they can’t fully participate until later on depending on what it is you’re talking about whether it’s communion or Confirmation, [we’re] [as] orthodox Christian babies are fully engaged in the whole life of the congregation sacramentally and Children grow up having received communion from their earliest memories because they literally being communed as as babies the Roman Catholic teaching about purgatory [and] then also the system of indulgences the orthodox do not believe in any of that We don’t believe that there is this kind of? stopover place where we have to wait and to suffer to have all of the the temporal consequences of sin wiped away and Paid paid for so purgatory and indulgences are simply not part of Orthodox Christian life at all Not only the second Vatican Council 1960s, but then there was this big Liturgical revision there was a big change in the normal worship life of your average cast The mass was totally changed and a lot of other things were changed in the worship life as well, but for the orthodox church We never have experienced anything like that certainly both [east] and [West] experienced liturgical change over the centuries But typically those changes were very slow And if there were reforms they were nothing anywhere near as major as what? Catholics experienced in the late 60s and the early 70s, [so] What what was the normal Catholic life prior to the 1960s is no longer than normal Catholic life? After this period But for the orthodox Christian there’s there’s a very very Little difference the question is for each of us is really just sort of how much we actually Participate in what is the normal Orthodox Christian life? It used to be that Roman Catholics had them a moderately rigorous fasting tradition now largely speaking the only obligation For most Catholics is that you don’t eat meat [on] Fridays during lent only so the orthodox Christian who is really following? What’s expected of us we end up fasting almost half the days of the year? That doesn’t mean that all the sox Christians are that good at fasting some are pretty good at it and some are not so good At it, but nonetheless the expectations have really not [changed] very much at all for the orthodox [throughout] history, we can see some adjustments [here] [and] there But there was a big change in the 20th century for Catholics where fasting was almost almost completely set aside [so] what you’re experiencing in day to day life as a catholic changed significantly in terms of what you are Expected to eat or not to eat whereas for the Orthodox. We’ve never really had that big change you Never know

Difference is orthodox have not accepted the Filioque clause which they says is an error to the Nicaean Creed ..the split was also political in the eastern churches were very proud and wanted preeminence considering the Western Empire classless …they denied the scripture Matt. 16:18 stating that Peter was the one to act as head of the body of the church ..
    Tatian the Syrian
“Simon Cephas answered and said, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah: flesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee also, that you are Cephas, and on this rock will I build my Church; and the gates of hades shall not prevail against it” ..in the vanity of the patriarchs and eastern bishops that did not want to give up their status they refused the primacy of the bishop of Rome ..Alexandria and Antioch had been over run by Islam leaving Constantinople as the seat of the eastern empire along with its patriarch inflating the importance of the east in the minds of eastern bishops…all in all it had more to do with the vanity of the eastern church and state leaders than theology which lead to the schism and as such heresy of the eastern churches …like protestants there is no one eastern church they all hold on to their own version of Christian theology and hierarchy ( power )

Roman Catholics are not Christians they are idol worshipper and removed the second commandment and worship a statue of mary! Of mary! Ok … so the roman pagan church with a hint of christianity mixed in it is NOT Christian! And are as guilty as murderers and rapist! No difference! But yeah sure you who read this with youre basic human mesurement understanding of this context will see it in youre own judgemental way! How you compaire things, doesent matter one bit to god how YOU mesure things! And orthadox has so many errors and bullshjitt attached to it self to that i only can save you and say get out while you can and read GOD word for youre self! And dont let any other man or organinisation feed youre mind bullshjitt!

I'm a former Evangelical Christian of 15 years and I'm becoming Catholic. From the outside looking in, it seems like the issues between the Catholic and Orthodox could be resolved if both sides would forgive each other and would work towards reunification. It would be fantastic to see.

And they should want to resolve it since Christ prayed that all who would come to believe in him would be one.

However, the Protestants are just straight wrong on just about all of their doctrines. They breed confusion and schism. I don't think there's one dogma all Protestants agree on.

I do agree with the priest in the video. Having attended the Tridentine mass and the Novus Ordo mass, they are very different. The Latin Mass is harder to follow, but much more beautiful and reverential. And everyone, especially women, are much more moderately dressed. And women veil their hair like Saint Paul said they should. Whereas the Novus Ordo is easier to follow but much less reverent. I also think Eucharistic ministers are way overused. And I don't like how much feminism has crept into the Novus Ordo churches. I think most if not all of the reforms of Vatican II should be rolled back and the Tridentine mass reinstated as the ordinary form of mass except with the addition of local languages instead of Latin only.

I would just like to point out that the Catholic reformation of the 1960's (Vatican II) is a huge betrayal to the Catholic religion. Many Catholics reject it.

I am Catholic but I love following the Orthodox videos because for me there is not much difference besides we are one in faith. What I want to know is why do we have to emphasize fasting when Jesus already said "I dont want sacrifice" but he wants our obedience our heart. Sometimes I really find the church teachings and what Jesus said not aligned.

Both Catholic and Orthodox churches REJECT God's way of justification separate from sanctification (good works) in Romans 4:6 ("Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works} and the imputed righteousness of Christ in Romans 4:24 (But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead); and 2 Corinthians 5:21 ("For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.)

Both insist to be justified by their own righteousness ("Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Gal 5:4
    ).

God now calls all in these churches to "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you, 2 Co 6:17

OK let's get one thing clear first the the Novus ordo the new advent which he is talking about is not Catholic stop calling it Catholic, the new advent was formulated by Protestant ministers in the 1960s who are Lutheran there is only one authentic Catholic Church and that is the Roman Catholic Church which the new advent is not, the new advent is a false church this man needs to get his facts right, he is also wrong about the Bishops and the pope the chair of Peter the keys of Heaven were handed to him by Christ and him alone not to all the bishops, upon this rock I will build my church they know this to be a fact they just don't want to accept it, the only problem is since that Vatican 2 there has been much sacrilege and heresy as a result of the so-called reforms, Vatican 2 was not a real it is a council of heresy and should never be accepted by authentic Roman Catholics, another problem since Vatican 2 is that most of the popes have been heretics since that time, in 107 AD in Antioch the church both east and west were known as Catholic so here's a good question why did the east side drop the name Catholic from it's title, I might like to point out that East Orthodox church is an authentic Christian church unlike the Protestant which are false so is the Novus ordo false, the east and the West need to stop throwing Stones at each other and get back together as the one church that was a started by Christ who is God get over yourselves let the wound heal instead of letting it Fester, we have to Eastern Rite and the Westin Rite OK, the reason why children have to be of certain age in the Roman Catholic church to receive Holy Communion is because they have to be of age of understanding of what the Holy Communion realy is the real presence of Christ body soul blood and divinity unfortunately on the east side there is a lot of Arian influence as of the 4th century

He says that he's had somebody come into His confessional and confess murder he says he's been a priest for 40 some years and he's just learned that people will confess horrible things he says he eventually you just kind of become numb to it and you learn to stop passing judgment on the person eventually.

As a true Christian I honour the Roman.Catholic Church and anyone who is a true Christian can honour the Catholic, Orthodox or any Protestant church as long as we respect, show humility with grace is what is being a true Christian.
Jesus has warned us about a division that I believe it’s in occurrence to the schism of the churches in 1 Corinthians 11:18.

Christianity evolved and spread popularity from the western Roman Catholic church and proves a point that the west had coined the bible and funded and formed the Byzantium eastern churches but nevertheless Christianity was born in Judea/Israel and was spoken in Aramaic not in Greek, Latin or English.
Our master and God in human flesh was Jewish and the first bishop of the church was Simon-Peter.
Christianity is not suppose to be of national or identity churches like the eastern rites (Greek, Russian, Coptic etc) or the western rites, (Roman, Anglican, Methodist, etc)
Christianity was originally Jewish and should be spoken and understood in Hebrew/Aramaic to have a deeper understanding of scripture so there wouldn’t be any false interpretations, heretical and divisions that happened historically and still is occurring in Christianity.
Perhaps one day and still waiting that Christianity will be ONE universal church

They are both the same. Corrupted by man. Chrysostom was an avid anti- Semite. Byzantine Church enslaved and persecuted Coptics. Both indoctrinate children. Both are dying churches.

We have given you the Zell Challenge 1 and 2 to help you see that Protestantism is a false religion. We now will attempt to prove to you that must obvious truth of all. Protestantism (both the Protestant and unProtestant Protestant religions) has both fractured Christ and has decayed into CHAOS and caused Christianity to be viewed as a corrupt and useless cacophony of myriads of splintered religions. No Muslim, Buddhist, or Hindu will take Christianity seriously with 40,000 denominations and cults all producing conflicting and contradictory doctrines.

To be honest, most of these differences are reasons why I'm a Catholic and not Orthodox. When it comes to the liturgical changes, this isn't that much of a problem anymore because TLM is available again (not everywhere, but its popularity is rising exponentially). Also, NO Masses when they're done properly (without abuses), are totally valid Masses. They can be very reverent and "old school" as well. It's mostly in places where the charismatic movement is popular, where NO Masses are full of abuses, but that's abuse, not how it should be done. Furthermore, there have always been changes to the liturgy. Not to the extent Protestants want to make us believe, but slight changes were always there. For example, before the Council of Trent, there was not one central form of Mass but different forms. Before the Great Schism, Masses also looked differently.

Then with all my respect if the patriarch is not in charge of the church then it is call disorder. Peter was after the Lord’s ascension in charge and leader of the Christian community- that’s why the Lord gives Peter authority and over him the church is founded.

There is NO difference…a church is a body of people gathered to worship the Lord…"Where Two are gathered I will be there"

Differences do not matter – what matters is Christ in us. Let's be grateful to He Who unites us.
