Ellen Welcomes Transcendental Meditation Expert Bob Roth

ELLEN DEGENERES:
This is the guy. If you’re going to learn
transcendental meditation, he’s the guy to learn it from. You have taught so
many amazing people. But we don’t want to
name-drop right now. So tell people what
TM is, exactly. BOB ROTH: So transcendental
meditation is a very simple, natural, easily
learned technique that’s done for about 15
to 20 minutes twice a day, sitting comfortably
in a chair, that just allows your active,
agitated, thinking mind to just settle down and access
a field of calm that lies deep within every one of us. I like to use the
analogy of an ocean. Choppy, turbulent waves on
the surface of the ocean. You could think, oh, my God,
the ocean is just in upheaval. But you do a cross-section,
and deep within the ocean, it’s silent. And our mind is the same way. And so transcendental
meditation– not a religion,
not a philosophy, not a weight change
in lifestyle. Anyone can do it
from 10 years of age and up And I taught Ellen,
and it was very satisfying. ELLEN DEGENERES: Yeah. How long ago did you teach me? BOB ROTH: It was like
six or seven years ago or something like that, was it? ELLEN DEGENERES: Yeah. It could’ve been
longer than that. BOB ROTH: Yeah. Long time. And you were great. I remember asking you why you
wanted to learn to meditate. I put this in the book. And Ellen said, I want to
maintain permanent connection with the intelligence
that runs the universe. And I thought, whoa. [LAUGHTER] And then she paused,
and she said, and I can’t sleep at night. [LAUGHTER] ELLEN DEGENERES: Yeah. And it does. It really helps you. I mean, it makes a difference. It just calms you down. So it seems like in the
world today, everybody– I mean, we just talked about
this on the show the other day. There’s a survey that says,
just about every young adult stresses six hours
a day in an average. And we’re all stressed
today with what’s going on in the world,
for various reasons. So it seems like now,
more than ever, is a time that people should meditate. BOB ROTH: Well, I
think we’re living in an epidemic of stress. And stress is not just something
we just want to muscle through. We can’t ignore it. It undermines our immune system. We get sick because of stress. Digestion, memory,
the ability to sleep. Literally, too much
stress over time kills us. And so now, more than
ever, it’s, not a luxury. We crave, we look for
quiet, for stillness. And there are many
meditations out there to try and stop the waves
on the surface of the ocean. They’re difficult to do. Transcendental
meditation, as you know, is just effortless diving
within and access that calm. And it completely transforms
the brain and the body. ELLEN DEGENERES: Yes, it does. Explain some of the things
that it does for you. BOB ROTH: Well, over
the last 40 years, there’s been over 400
scientific studies published on the technique that show
that it reduces anxiety, twice as much as any other
relaxation technique. Depression, insomnia. It wakes up the
brain and improves memory, focus, creativity. For people who have high blood
pressure and heart disease, it’s more effective than– in many regards, than even
anti-hypertensive medication. That’s not just me talking. That’s the American Medical
Association publishing research and the government
funding research. ELLEN DEGENERES: Yeah. It’s amazing, what it does– I mean, once you get into it. So people say they have no time
for it, and then they say– so we’ll start with that. No time for it, and also
they say, I’m not good at it. BOB ROTH: As one person said,
there’s 1,440 minutes in a day. We’re talking 20 minutes twice a
day, 40 minutes out of our life to really– for self-care. And you look forward to it. ELLEN DEGENERES:
It’s kind of hard, because we have a noisy
world, and a lot of people have kids and have
a noisy household. And so it’s really
hard to find– I posted a picture on my
Instagram the other day. Portia was trying to meditate. I was across from
her on this day bed. And so she is
trying to meditate, and she had three dogs
on her lap, one cat. And she managed to still
do it, but it’s really hard to meditate when you are
distracted like that all the time. BOB ROTH: Well,
I mean, the thing is, is that’s why you want to do
it first thing in the morning, before the kids get up. And it’s better than sleep. People say, oh, I need my sleep. But you get up 20
minutes earlier, and the research
shows it’s actually in some regards twice as deep as
the deepest part of deep sleep. And it wakes up
the brain, and it gives us more energy for the
day and makes us more resilient. ELLEN DEGENERES: So
what’s the first step? If somebody says, this
sounds interesting to me, but I don’t have
access to Bob, and I don’t know– how do I start? BOB ROTH: So go to tm.org, find
a TM center that’s near you, and find out about it. Educate yourself. Make an informed decision. And if you want
to learn, it’s not taught in a mass, meditation. It’s taught one to one,
from a certified teacher, so you really get it. And the beautiful
thing is, there’s thousands of TM
teachers in the US and around the world
who can teach someone to meditate properly. ELLEN DEGENERES: And
you’re now in schools. How many schools are you in? Inner-city schools? BOB ROTH: Well, I head up
what’s called the David Lynch Foundation. And it’s a nonprofit
organization, and we provide
transcendental meditation to at-risk populations. Veterans who suffer from
post-traumatic stress disorder. Women who are survivors
of domestic violence. And now, 600,000
inner-city school kids who suffer from trauma
that we can’t imagine. It’s no longer a luxury. It’s actually– we were
talking about this. It’s an exercise from– you say it better. ELLEN DEGENERES: Well,
basically, people spend so much time exercising
from the neck down. And we do everything
to take care of our body, when the most
important thing is our mind, and to relieve stress
and relieve anxiety. Because I don’t know about you,
but I have a lot of anxiety with what’s going on in
the world, a lot of stress. And I have to come out here
and be happy every single day, and I want to feel clear. And the only way to
do that is really to get to that quiet place
and be silent and still. BOB ROTH: What does it feel
like when you sit to meditate? ELLEN DEGENERES: I told you. It feels like I’m home. It feels like the noise– everyone gets so
used to the noise. We get so used to
just a humming sound. Have you ever been in a room
and you hear this humming sound, and until it turns off– it’s
like a ice machine or an air conditioner–
until it turns off, you didn’t even realize
there was a noise? That’s what it’s like
when you start meditating. You’re like, oh, my
God, I had no idea how noisy everything was
until I was still and quiet. And it changes everything. So tell everyone– first of
all, the book is so good. But what are you doing
with the proceeds? BOB ROTH: Well, this
book was published by Simon and Schuster. They did a great job. And I told them when
I wrote the book that I want to donate
100% of all the proceeds that come to me– I’m donating it back to
bring this to our veterans, so they can learn to
meditate for free. [APPLAUSE] And children. It’s an epidemic of stress. We need to address it together. And I’m very grateful
to be able to do this. And I’m very grateful to
you to have me on the show. ELLEN DEGENERES: Of course. I’m grateful to you
to teach me this, because it’s changed my life. It’s the best thing that– and there are so
many people that are in high-stress positions
that are doing the same thing. And I think just about
anybody in the world right now has a high-stress position. And especially people who are
moms and dads, who have kids, that there’s a lot going on. So this is very, very handy. For more information
on how you can purchase Bob’s book,
Strength and Stillness, and find a TM center near
you, go to our website. Everyone is going
home with a copy. [APPLAUSE]

I learned TM 46 years ago and I have practiced it regularly since. It's great…I love what it has done for me. Learn from a trained teacher…don't listen to people who say make up your own mantra and this is how to do it. Just find a trained teacher and enjoy.

I just happen to have my first clsss the day this aired. My TM center was very busy due to the publicity. I really had a great experience with it in my first class, three to go. However I tried to meditate this morning and I just couldn’t get to the peaceful, grounded place I was during my first personal instruction. My son was making a lot of noise which was distracting. Kind of disappointing, but again I’m new and I’m sure it takes practice.

This interview is fantastic! So concise and to the point about how powerful of a mental technique Transcendental Meditation is. David Lynch Foundation is doing an amazing job around the world with helping populations in need to learn this lifelong giving tool. For those who want to learn it for themselves – whatever the reason for it (high performance, self realization, stress relief, health benefits etc.) it is one of the best investments you can make for yourself if you go and learn the technique from a certified TM teacher.

Ellen I don't think having pets around when meditating is a good idea sadly :/… The things that are going on with your brain waves (human) being so close in contact to your pet's brain waves (animal) won't be so good for the pets. Has to do with their own waves not being able to deal to how your (human) brain waves are reacting (evolving). If you were a fellow animal like them it would be ok xD. Around other people's pets it's ok because they don't have a personal link to you.

For those who may be interested, Transcendental Meditation is actually a global cult movement. The easy technique alone is merely the entree. If you have any doubts – just google about the Cult of Transcendental Meditation. FYI, here are links to photos of some of their "Rajas" who each paid $1million for their Raja-Training course : https://www.google.com/search?q=tm+rajas&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiKn5m1kaTaAhVFZawKHZ1RBrEQ_AUICigB&biw=1089&bih=807

I need a new mantra. Almost as soon as I was taught and given a mantra, I met and did a course with woman who was named that. She was not someone who's energy was settling, in any way. It's very odd to sit down and say some woman's name, over and over and have her face come to mind. Actually, I never felt "at home" as Ellen said, with that mantra. The technique, yes, just not that mantra.

Back in the 70s, I sold a set of golf clubs to pay for TM tuition and everything I learned through all of the sessions could have been written on a Post-It note. After doing it for a few months, I realized that it was a waste of time. If you really want to throw your money away on this scam, do the following:
    1. Sit in a comfortable position and rest for a few minutes;
    2. Start repeating a mantra silently in your mind for about 15 minutes. If you need a mantra, go to http://selfhelprobot.com/51-meditation-mantras-list . I have checked it out and the one they taught me is on it.
    3. After you are done, sit quietly for about five minutes.
    4. Do this twice per day.
    5. If after about two months you finally realize that you haven't experienced any of the beneficial effects promised by TM, then go buy yourself a set of golf clubs – 18 holes on a Saturday afternoon will bring you much more inner peace.

I plan to incorporate your wisdom along with what I have just recently learned at Rythmia Life Advancement Center in Costa Rica: Breathwork! I never paid much attention to my breathing, but when I was introduced to techniques of conscious rhythmic breathing it took me to new levels of consciousness and generated an emotional catharsis that has me feeling lighter and freer than I have felt in years. I am truly grateful to the Trainer there, R. Christian Minson, and Rythmia for helping me to take my journey of wellness to an entirely new level. Check out Christian at Rythmia! Tm cost is based on income, which is nice I guess but for someone making less than 50,000 a year the cost is 4 monthly payments of $125. This makes me think that this is another bs woo woo trend just to make money. If you really want to help people don’t put up these unrealistic financial obstacles.

Idk i think mindfullness is more effective…if i wanna sit still for hours on end and not speak or make a sound then shit i can do that when im dead. Id rather eat live laugh and love all day everyday. Live like you are alive not like you are dead! Live! Civil rights activists did'nt get as far as they did and didnt press to move congress and the senate to act and pass legislation on the half of minorities by being still! They acted, they fought and they still rise. I'll be still when i sleep and when listening to my favorite songs music and or movies! But, i gotta keep making an impact upon the hearts of others. Im not gonna sit still and relish in the Me of Me! Im gonna live my life and help a friend in need. Love a person that i love! And share my life experiences with those that need to hear it! Also, i listen and care to listen!!

It is not easy to learn how to do it on your own, it takes focus and persistence, so I recommend getting a teacher for some time, but when you practice it often – for me, it's ten minutes a day- it is energizing, calming, cleansing, and can be more restoring than sleep.

I study Qigong with a true Qigong master. Qigong teaches a person how to meditate. These meditations include inner meditations and moving meditations (similar to Tai Chi). You are right, most people only think about exercising the body, some exercise the mind, but very few people think about exercising the spirit. When you perform Qigong you are exercising the mind, body, and spirit.

God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2:6

So as a Christian I have no need to Transcend, You think?

I’m my experience TM works up to a point. It is a good tool for stress and anxiety but it’s not magic. If you have to do other things to feel better such as exercising, staying sober, getting busy and so on you’d still have to do those things. In other words, TM is not a “miracle cure” so to speak as some believe it is. Plus keep in mind you have dedicate 25 mins or so twice a day “forever” in order for this technique to supposedly work properly. Not to mention almost $1,000 for the initial course. Again, I can only speak for my myself. In conclusion, the technique seems to promote calmness and so on but it’s not as amazingly purportedly to work. It’s not magic, it’s another tool in the box to use if desired.

This is the real deal – it works and it is easy and effortless to practice. The technique itself is priceless but the fee for learning is to provide income for the teachers and to keep the centers available for others to be able to learn.

TM is basically mantra japa dhayana…and it's available to all..they shouldn't be charged.for it…plus although Hinduism was never a religion…it is important for one seeking spiritual path to learn about the 8 limbs like prtyahara asana etc and learn the Hindu philosophy to truly change the world and at least themselves in a meaningful way

I agree after learning TM last week and only doing it for one week. I already feel and see the benefits doing it for only 7 days.

As always this channel is superb. Interesting take on transcendental meditation. In our recent visit to the Kumbh mela we were fortunate to experience it and also interview and film (for our youtube channel) a veteran American who has learnt transcendental meditation from the guru of The Beatles (John Lennon,
Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr).

My biggest gripe about accessing Transcendental Meditation (at least in my area) is that they have these mini-seminars. And they invite you in and get you interested …. then the TM coach wants a $1K investment to show you the rest. This obviously cuts out a certain population that cannot afford it.

I like this guy, he's kinda cool, very mellow. Ellen is kinda cool to, my kid loves her. My kid tells me that Ellen makes the audience wear bright colours because she wants everyone on a positiva which is kinda cool. Yeah, she's cool to, she's cool.

TM is bottled water being sold beside a nourishing stream of fresh spring water. "It reduces anxiety twice as much as any other relaxation technique". What a shyster.

People do not pay anyone to teach you TM… All you need is a mantra and 20 minutes, twice a day… Make up a non word like shi-am, or anything…. try for at least 30 days. You don't need a certified teacher. What a rip off.

Transcendental Meditation has its roots in the Dharmic practice in Hinduism. Guy’s like him in the West, claiming that this meditation technique does not have Hindu origins is such a lie. It was developed by Yogi Maharashtra Mahesh. People like this guest are not giving credit where it is due. There is also a process of delinking TM to Hinduism which is deliberately done to make TM more palatable to Western/ Judeo-Christian practitioners.

If you're a full time student it's $95 a month for 4 months and then you are done paying. I have been practicing for a month and while I am not in a blissed out state of being, I am sleeping better and have more energy!
