THE QUESTION. THAT IS THE THE FIRST QUESTION.>>THIS IS WHEN YOU– THIS IS
WHEN YOU DIP PHILOSOPHICAL.>>Stephen: SURE, THAT’S THE
FIRST QUESTION. WHEN I WAS FIRST IN COLLEGE I

THE URGES OF A BELIEVER TO REJECT EVIDENCE IN FAVOR OF
FAITH?>>Stephen: (BLEEP). WHAT ARE YOU TALKI TALKING ABOUT
>>Jon: BEEP!>>Stephen: THE URGES OF A
BELIEVER TO REJECT EVIDENCE. WHO SAYS– THAT’S SPOKEN BY
SOMEBODY WHO IS NOT A BELIEVER. THERE IS NO URGE TO REJECT
EVIDENCE. I DON’T THINK THAT MY FAITH IS
RELATED TO EVIDENCE. THEY’RE DIFFERENT THINGS. MY FAITH APPROACHAISE MYSTERY. MY FAITH COMES FROM A PLACE OF A
NEED TO BE GRATEFUL. LIKE, MY FAITH COMES FROM A
PLACE WHERE I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE WORLD. AND I CANNOT ANSWER THE
QUESTION, “WHY IS THERE SOMETHING INSTEAD OF NOTHING?”
AS YOU AND I HAVE DISCUSSED MANY TIMES. UNTIL YOU CAN TELL ME WHY THERE
IS SOMETHING INSTEAD OF NOTHING I SEE A PLACE TO PLACE MY
GRATITUDE FOR MY EXISTENCE, HOW STRANGE IT IS TO BE ANYTHING AT
ALL. AND FROM THERE, I CAN
EXTRAPOLATE INTO MY OWN TRADITION, WHICH IS CHRISTIANITY
AND CATHOLICISM, AND MY GRATITUDE FOR CHRIST, THROUGH
HIM ALL THINGS WERE MADE. ( APPLAUSE )
>>HE REHEARSED THAT, I’M SURE!>>Stephen: BUT I LIKE
EVIDENCE. I LIKE EVIDENCE, BECAUSE IT IS
BETTER TO KNOW THAN NOT TO KNOW. I WAS TAUGHT BY INTELLECTUAL
CATHOLICS WHO BELIEVED YOU COULD STILL BE A CATHOLIC AND STILL
QUESTION YOUR CHURCH. ( APPLAUSE )
YEAH, WHICH SOMEBODY ONCE SAID TO ME– SOMEBODY ONCE SAID TO
ME, “OH, SO YOU CAN BELIEVE YOU CAN BE A CATHOLIC AND DISAGREE
WITH YOUR CHURCH? THERE’S A WORDINAR. IT’S A PROTESTANT.” ( LAUGHTER ).>>LAST QUESTION HERE– WHAT ARE
YOU MOST WORRY ABOUT IN THE NEXT CENTURY? A CENTURY AGO PEOPLE WERE
WORRIED ABOUT POPULATION AND… WHAT’S THE ONE WHERE YOU CAN’T
BREATHE?>>Stephen: BREATHE.>>BREATHING.>>Stephen: TUBERCULOSIS. T.B.>>THEY’RE WORRIED ABOUT
TUBERCULOSIS, POPULATION OVERRUN. TODAY THAT’S NOT WHAT ANYBODY IS
WORRIED ABOUT. WE HAVE ASTEROIDS, CLIMBED
CHANGE, A.I. TAKING OVER. A BOX THAT WILL RUN YOUR LIFE.>>Stephen: I’M AFRAID A.I. WON’T TAKE OVER. RIGHT NOW IT’S JUST US RUNNING
THE SHOW, AND I DON’T KNOW IF YOU’VE SEEN HUMANS’ TRACK
RECORD, IT’S NOT THAT GOOD.>>IT’S NOT THAT GOOD. THAT’S WHY WE WORRY WHEN THEY DO
TAKE OVER THEY’RE DONE WITH US.>>Stephen: WHAT UPSET ME THIS
WEEK, THE STORY, SINCE 1970, 60% OF THE WORLD’S WILDLIFE– LIKE
VERTEBRATES, EVENTUALLY, HAS GONE AND I THINK.>>THAT’S CORRECT. BUT BY OUR HAND.>>Stephen: THAT’S SAD.>>WE HAVE ENTERED A NEW ERA
WHERE WE ARE THE PRIMARY DRIVERS OF THE WORLD’S EXTINCTION, NOT
ASTEROIDS. IT’S BAD. BUT WHAT WORRIES ME MORE IS 100
YEARS FROM NOW WHAT, WOULD BE ON THEIR LIST THAT WE DON’T EVEN
KNOW YET THAT WE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT? ( LAUGHTER )
>>Stephen: SUPER INTELLIGENT JELLYFISH.>>STEPHEN COLBERT, EVERYBODY! ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )

    Here's something that intrigues me.
Why is it a common thought that any other universe in the multiverse includes, or must include humans or even life for that matter?
Several brilliant minds have discussed the multiverse, and all of them include other versions of ourselves.
Nothing in the universe dictates that even life must exist, much less human life.
I just find it interesting humanity is always included in the discussion of other possible universes.
Almost never hear about a universe in which for example, only the upside down mirrored image of the number 4 exists.
    lol

    Colbert nailed it right there!
His faith is seperate from evidence because it in and of itself is the bullshit.
Believing something with no evidence.. this is why religion was our first and worst attempt at trying to understand the world

When already the frame of mind is believing, some christians are not really christians. They are just good People who have the need to put a name to the fact that they believe.

Neil De Grasse Tyson. After listening to lots of atheists and i feel happy enough beign one myself but dotn mind not being one either, I have come to realise that for me it is not, God or not, that mattered to me about religion it was the psychological wisdom of lots of bits of religon. Such things as the crucified Christ asking God to forgive the Romans because they knew not what they did. which seems to me so sensible , it seems to me that a lot of baddies know not what they do. Because, he said turn the other cheek, not a good idea with bullies but otherwise saves a whole lot of fights. He said, love others as yourself, which is so much more sensible than love others as i believe plato did. I am sure i can feel that my slave is sweet as all hell and so think I love him and yet beat him weekly, in an excess of strictness, and fail to educate him so as to maintain a whole lot of advantages he will not be able to access if he is untaught. MInd you, people can take Jesuses advice and then decide that the other is not like them, so who knows ghoe to love them? Women are different, so they are happy in the kitchen all the time, while i go to the pub, for example.
Another example of something fascinating about religions is what the yogis do, those who dedicate their lives to observing their respiration, so as to catch every physiological change in their bodies, when the are in different situations, starting with changes in their breathing, so that they know how to calm themselves down and others down. A study of themselves which is pretty well scientific and an incredible sacrifice of all normal acivities, like having a family and going out to have fun. They spend all their time on such studies

What does it matter if God exists or not when religions are so dangerous that you should be pointing out how dangerous they are instead of how silly. Catholics teach children about Jesus, a nice guy who said "Love your neighbor as yourself", and "He who lives by the sword wil die by it", and that is also their public face, but what big wigs in catholisism really believe in and try to slowly turn adult catholics towards is, Saint Augustine, who said that if an evil could be cured with violence it would be a sin not to use it and he means what the church considers really bad evils, like sinning, which shows that you don't truly believe, that you are in part heretical or being actually heretical, a person of a different religion, things that as far as they are concerned will send people to hell, not seeing a person killing another and using violence to stop it, but using violence to stop free thinkers, and using verbal violence as well as physical violence and war. The rulers of south american countries were Catholics iand their repression of communists, who ar heretics was violent, as it was here in Spain and hte church here absolutel backed up Franco. I htink Colbert has received verbal abuse from them, he used to say things that indicated that he did recieve their covert verbal abuse. They get very nasty and they vote for biolionaires, I suppose many of hte churches are billionaires, and so, trying to minimise their evil effects is much more important than wondering whether they believe in God or not.

As a believer who loves science, I wouldn't be as expressive as Colbert was here, he made me proud and comfortable. Because many believers are total embarrassment to us in front atheists, agnostics, and Scientologists. And it's also amazing to see how Christianity is involved in philosophy in way it makes space for genuine believers to be able to stand for something. my muslim faith had less clash with science in the past. However it remains today more opposing to Scientology without a philosophical intellectual debate. and that's sad.

His faith doesn't come from anywhere but his old book which is filled with unscientific BS and immoral behaviors. The dishonesty of theists has no bounds.
To believe in the christian gawd, you need to reject evidence. The fact that he doesn't know that proves only one thing : either he doesn't know his book enough, or doesn't know science enough.

Stephen, I do love you, and I agree with you on a lot of things but since there is masses of evidence that proves all organised religions and their holy books wrong, that means that believers reject evidence. It doesn't help that every believer I have spoken to or heard of never talks about evidence, actually they actively avoid it when a reasonable discussion is started. There is also the fact that religious leaders tell their congregations to do as they are told and accept what they are told without question, simply by stating that something is "god's will".
There are plenty of people on this earth who are thankful for their lives and this world who don't need to look to man made gods.

Now I personally have no problem with people believing whatever they need to in order to get thru this crazy thing called life, but those beliefs should be personal. They should not be used to control others, either by religious rules or "conversion" or by making them laws of a nation, nor should they be a reason for wars or genocide or torture or enslavement or crusades or colonisation or murder just because some people don't believe the same as others.
Religion being a personal choice is fine but organised religion is responsible for more evil and more death than anything else humanity has faced so far.

You can place your gratitude for existance somewhere without religion.
If it is just a place for gratitude to reside then choosing a single god to place that gratitude with within the 3500 available seems rather odd.

They are so cute. This is how a conversation between two adult human should be like. We all have different bias, belief, emotion and history. If you want to make your point, then debate with reasons not shout across the room; are you an adult or a 2 year old kid. We all want the best for the world in our own view; some more limited than other. If you can't win in the debate/argument, then you have to choose, like anything else in life:
    1. accept the other view to be better than your own,
    2. do more research than reasoning it back at them. I argue for the later.
Do your research and argue back, even if you have to go back and forth on the subject, this is how we growth our intellect as human for centuries. Why stop now?

So, he's saying that until Science can answer all the questions regarding the origins and meaning of life, Faith has a place in which it can inhabit.

That's essentially the, "God of the gaps," philosophy.

But, as the field of our understanding of the physical Universe increases, so does the boundary of our ignorance.

Meaning, the more we learn, the more we discover how much we still don't know.

When you put something in that space, even as a placeholder, you're beginning to negate your ability to participate in the enterprise of discovery.

For example; "We can't explain dark matter, it must be God." Is what someone says when they've given up on trying to figure it out.

People have been doing this since the beginning of time. Even Ptolmey and Isaac Newton invoked a, "creator," when they reached the limits of their understanding.

And, they basically left it up to someone else to figure out.

Had they instead continued to try working on the questions, they could have just as easily figured it out themselves.

But, in Isaac Newton's case, it took all the way until Albert Einstein in the early 20th. Century to refine and indeed rewrite the human understanding of the physical world.

Standing on the shoulders of giants.

My point is; Objective science causes Religion to steadily and relentlessly recede.

You only limit yourself when you put something in the way of discovery, but it can have the associated consequence of stunting the intellectual growth of the species at large.

And, scientific literacy is the best inoculation against those who would try to BS you.
