True for You but Not for Me

Is there such a thing as truth? Or is everything, including truth, a statement
of personal opinion or preference? In other words, is truth relative? For our purposes here, let’s put aside the
science angle. Yes, you can sit on a couch and not appear
to be moving, but since the earth, at the equator, is rotating at 1100 miles per hour,
you are, from that perspective, moving —and very fast. I’m not talking about that kind of relative. Let’s confine ourselves to the more everyday
questions of truth. Like, does it exist? Once, the answer to this question was obvious—usually
confined to late-night discussions in college dorm rooms. But no longer. Truth is going through a tough time. A white woman feels black and represents herself
to be so. She rises in the leadership ranks of the NAACP
until her fiction is exposed. She refuses to go quietly, however. She feels black, and so she is black. A 69 year-old man in the Netherlands petitions
the court to legally change his age to 49 because that’s how he feels. And, of course, seemingly on a daily basis,
men (and more and more boys), with all the chromosomes and body parts that make them
distinctly male, declare themselves to be female; and women (and more and more girls)
likewise declare themselves to be male. They feel they are one sex or the other; therefore,
they are that sex. And we must accept that, regardless of what
the truth is. In a viral video, a 5-foot, 9-inch American
Caucasian male asks students at the University of Washington to acknowledge that he’s Chinese,
or six-foot-five, or a woman. Some hesitate, but no one will tell him what
he’s saying is not true – that he’s not what he says he is. That would be “mean”—and “intolerant.” This “true for you, but not for me” relativism
is disconcerting because it requires the acceptance of obvious contradictions, denial of reality,
and common sense. Rather than adjusting our lives to the truth,
the truth has to adjust itself to us. But it’s very difficult to live this way,
not to mention it being highly impractical. We rely on mind-independent universal truths
in order to think clearly, to navigate life. Otherwise, we quickly get lost. There must be some things that just are—things
that are true. This way points North for everybody, no matter
what anyone happens to prefer or sincerely believe. So, what is truth? At its root, truth is a match-up with reality. A story, a statement, or belief is only true
if it lines up with what’s real. It’s like a socket wrench fitting perfectly
onto a bolt. Reality is the truth-maker; reality makes
something true. To say “the earth is flat” or “the moon
is made of green cheese” is false. Why? Because it doesn’t match up with reality. Until quite recently, the purpose of all education
in large part was the pursuit of truth. The motto of Harvard University, for example,
is “veritas,” Latin for “truth.” No more. Anyone who says education should be about
the pursuit of truth is immediately shot down with the comeback: “Whose truth?” Increasingly, people speak of “my truth,”
or say “it’s true for me,” or “your reality”—as though truth is merely a matter
of opinion or perspective. At the 2018 Golden Globe awards, Oprah Winfrey
famously said that “speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.” Now, you can have your experience or your
perspective. But there is no such thing as “your truth”
or “my truth.” There is only the truth—that which is true
for everyone. As Wall Street Journal writer Byron Tau noted,
“Oprah employed a phrase that I’ve noticed a lot of other celebrities using these days:
‘your truth’ instead of ‘the truth.’” But, he added, “’your truth’ undermines
the idea of shared common facts.” And here’s another problem with “your
truth”: If “your truth” is truth, anyone who doesn’t hold that truth must be wrong. This sounds a lot like narcissism. And it’s intellectual bullying. “Believe ‘my truth’—or else.” Not exactly a positive, pro-truth message. Yeah, truth is going through a tough time. So let’s review: Truth can’t be relative. If it is relative, it’s not truth. To say “there is no truth for all people”
is to declare a truth for all people. In effect, you’re saying, “It’s true
that there is no truth!” And to declare that both your and my opinions
are true even if they contradict one another is to speak nonsense. Truth isn’t opinion or preference. It’s not subjective or relative. It is inescapable because reality is inescapable. No amount of double-talk will change that. And that’s the truth. I’m Paul Copan, author of True for You,
But Not for Me, for Prager University.

The truth may seem synonymous to opinion for some since some folks have inherited ethics that doesn't prioritize existing inherently making reality meaningless as well as making arbitrary feelings and social interactions (community) that all manifests from reality the only thing that can be interesting.

  23. Patrick3183 Posted on August 13, 2019 at 10:53 pm

  24. Giuseppe Pollicino Posted on August 13, 2019 at 10:54 pm

Truth becomes subjective when one isn't grounded by reality, it isn't a surprise for Oprah to treat the material world as a mear tempory construct and to value the interactions with people as a true reality considering that she has a gnostic standard of ethics.

There are facts, things that are absolutely true. Then there are opinions, perspectives we derive from how we percieve fact. Those are relative. An opinion isn't necessarily false or true but it is something someone holds to be true based of of belief. So to answer the question of whether or not truth is relative. The answer is also relative based of of context.

  34. Charles124 Posted on August 14, 2019 at 12:36 am

well, I don't disagree with what you said but well let me explain. now let's get this out of the way no I am not siding with them but I don't agree with you all the way I think that there is a middle ground for example instead of saying he is a girl and you say he is a man let's say he was born a man and changed into a girl or he is a man but he feels like a girl. I hate the left just as much as you guys do but there are somethings that we need to think more about what we say so that we don't do unnecessary harm keyword unnecessary I don't care if it causes harm as long as it is justified even if I have to disagree with a Republican or conservative. we all don't think about whether or not what we are thinking is true we just do it I know that I have I thought the past like 7 years that I was a bad person and that I do nothing but harm but then I realized after listening to someone at spectrum health that I was not who I thought I was I figured out that all on my own that I was wrong and began questioning what I was thinking and was better than before. now think of what may be a course of action without hollowing the herd look at both sides and do research and a lot of it and try to look for inconsistencies that may arise if you want to see what you should be looking for just look a few shifts down

1 can it be repeated 2 see if their cud be an outside force at play like the placebo effect or nocebo effect 3 make sure that the study is not being held back by much if it is ethics then just ignore it because we need things like ethics to make sure that we aren't making unnecessary harm that's why we have these things after all and that is it

Lincoln once asked, "If we say a dog's tail is a leg, how many legs does a dog have?" Some answered that in that case, a dog has five legs. "No," said Lincoln, "A dog still has four legs. Saying a tail is a leg doesn't make it a leg." A whole generation is being raised to reject just that kind of common sense.

Leftist here: trannies are weird yes, but it is a psychological condition and the treatment for it is for their peers to accept them as who they want to be. You don’t have to believe they are a woman, just say they are (it doesn’t hurt that much i promise). Most helicopters happen to be trolls and I love a good troll but I will call them a helicopter (even though inside i don’t believe it). Why? Because it seems unnecessary to make someone feel sad just to assert my externally subjective opinions.

I have a serious and sincere question for anyone who identifies as "trans." This has nothing to do with hate, so if you want to take offense, you'll need to take it from someone else. I have no time for misplaced outrage. The statistics for depression and suicide among those who choose to identify as trans do not seem to show a therapeutic or healing effect deriving from this "identifier" choice. So what is the main purpose behind this practice? How is it serving anything other than a sort of…indulgence?

  42. TheKnellBelle Posted on August 14, 2019 at 2:16 am

I have a family member who is a therapist and unfortunately this kind of talk seems to be all the rage in psychology and counselling. When we were having a discussion about something hurtful they had said to my husband, they denied it but thanked me for "sharing my truth." Ridiculous! This phraseology is just an escape route for people who don't want to have to think about unpleasant topics or provide evidence for their point.

  43. Ladco77 Posted on August 14, 2019 at 2:26 am

In this video's usage, "truth" means the same thing as "fact." That is actually the definition of truth: conformity with fact or reality.

The moment you start speaking about neuroscience, that even neurosurgeons / psychologists / psychiatrists don't even understand, you've lost the argument.
This video guy won't answer my question but: Do you deny gay people exist? That is: Are you saying that there aren't some (4% aka 1/25) people aren't born with mating instincts to be attracted to people of the same sex/gender, who still/also love being the gender they biologically are? If not, why can't some (a fraction of 1%) of people have the brain instincts or whatever of the opposite gender that they are? They're obviously physically & biologically one gender, but to say they aren't "born the wrong gender" for their brain state would be to assume you know everything about neuroscience and saying that everyone is born in a perfect identical way.

As for Dozel… I believe in evolution so we're all "of African decent". trollface I honestly don't know what to say about that case.

People are being taught to view issues, morality, and reality through the subjective/relative lens, and to ignore conventional and objective reality.

It does seem to reinforce narcissistic tendencies in people. How many people simply cannot admit they are or might be wrong about an issue, or deviate to another topic to avoid answering. Narcissism at work.

  67. Vladymyr Tymoshenko Posted on August 14, 2019 at 10:24 am

"Obvious contradictions, denial of reality and common sense…" Well, why don't you use such level of scepticism and scrutiny when you talk about your religious beliefs rather than about some tolerance nonsense? Everyone thinks his beliefs represent some universal truth while others are considered wrong. And when an apologist, who thinks the book he cherishes (The Old Testament, of course) represents universal command of morality while disregarding other sources of knowledge about the nature of morality, says "The truth is what matches with reality", one should understand that the truth is in deep deep trouble.

  68. Oded Sayar Posted on August 14, 2019 at 10:58 am

Gender is a social construct… It doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, just that its meaning shifts relative to culture and context. It's more like money than age in that sense. Say you run some errand for someone and they gave you 50$. It's a symbolic value you agreed on as it's worth it for them and you need the money. You can go buy a nice pair of shoes with this money.
But if you were to travel to India and spend it there you could buy a whole lot more with those same 50$. You might even get to a place where people don't want your American dollars, and they'll suddenly worth nothing (more likely to happen if you were, say an Israeli like me and earned NIS). Like the value of money, the meaning of gender is agreed upon through language and social structures, hence it is socially constructed

  69. Oded Sayar Posted on August 14, 2019 at 11:40 am

Your truth = your perspective of the truth. Other people observe different aspects of the truth. Using these terms comes to emphasize that we humans are limited in our perception of reality, and that more often than not the things that are considered to be objective facts are merely shared perspective, that much like scientific claims may be proved wrong. Another important observation is that historically much of the collected "shared perspective" was contributed by the more hegemonic/privileged parts of society, and thus diversity is important in order to adjust our currently very skewed understanding of reality.
A lot of conservative thought is dedicated to discussing humility, I think that the concept of truth and our ability to observe it objectively is a crucial topic to apply it to

  75. darth_Dan Posted on August 14, 2019 at 2:48 pm

By "someone's truth" people usually mean something that is true from someone's perspective. Like a person's intentions. I may not have gotten to the same conclusion as someone else, given same facts. But that person did, and it's their truth.
And this has nothing to do with Absolute Truth. One that cannot by any means be subjective. One that is pursued by science or education.
Some words just have two meanings. In other languages (take Russian for example) there are in fact two words for truth.
There is also a saying, truth (subjective) is one of the faces of the absolute truth (veritas). And you can know many faces. But until you know them all, you cannot know the absolute truth.

  76. Sir Francis Posted on August 14, 2019 at 2:54 pm

I wonder about other pragerU videos, particularly the ones about religion, or the Bible being the best book to read to kids before bed and so on.. what about truth there? Where is truth on the existence of god? Where are the facts checking with reality there? For some reason the scientific view is left aside in the beginning of the video, which is just nonsense. Science is a method that relies on that description of truth. So, want objective truth? Go scientific! Good video, agree with everything, just wonder why is that difficult to accept the truth about the truth.. makes me think that PragerU has its own truth! Thanks for the video and the educational work, even if it’s doubtful for skeptics reasons.

  82. James Skene Posted on August 14, 2019 at 3:43 pm

My book, which contains the following poem “Truth”:

I truly believed what I thought was True,/
Which means that I thought what I thought./
Then a thinker informed me that Truth isn't True,/
    truth is merely a viewpoint you've got./

If its True that my truth isn't tied to the Truth,/
then all thought is a waste of my time,/
but I think as we think we are more like a sleuth,/
finding out if our truth and Truth rhyme./

Now, that thinker who said that my truth wasn't True,/
was speaking as if he spoke Truth,/
which means that he didn't quite think these things through:/
There's no Truth to his truth there's no Truth./

For the statement that nothing is True can't be True;/
if it was True, it wouldn't be so./
When a Thinker like this shares their wisdom with you,/
say, "How True!" then just smile and go./

A confused, distracted and dependent population is far easier to control than a firmly rooted, independent population. If you're continually focused on your own little quirks and problems, you won't have time to recognize or address those in power (and what they do).

I think the whole idea of "your truth and my truth" is primarily used by people who are intellectually lazy and use it to deflect any criticism.

I know, it is really impractical when you know that climate change is a real thing, but other folks deny it. When you know that immigrants contribute more to your economy, but others want to close the borders. When you know that nobody needs an assault weapon, but others think they have a right to own one, then occasionally one of them uses theirs to kill people. It is really tough when you know the truth, but there are others who seek to deny it…

I don't care what you people think
I identify as a fash. It's my truth
If your truth disagrees you're fashist.

That's gold coming from the side of "alternative facts".

The Emile Ratelband example was sarcastic to show exactly this retarded behavior.

The future of space travel: "I don't need a space suit, I identify as a vacuum breather"!

    Truth….liberals can't handle the truth!

There ARE universal truths, and the left accepts them. For example, it is true that transphobes are trash.

I am a Martian. Therefore, I do not have to pay any taxes here on earth. AND, since no one else is here from Mars, I am the Martian ambassador and don't have to follow any laws.

Leftist here, while I feel he is misinterpreting some things here, the overall message is 100% solid.

“As a political candidate, I’ll go with how people feel, and I’ll let you go with the theoreticians.”

-Alexandria Ocasio Cortez to a liberal reporter

Wait, did I say AOC? I meant Newt Gingrich at the 2016 Republican National Convention.

  97. I EAT ASS Posted on August 14, 2019 at 7:12 pm

This video is nonsense. There are people who believe in a supernatural cosmic spirit that created the universe and listens to our thoughts. That's true for some people, and not true for others.
