What Does God Want Me to Do?

I don’t know if there is enough light in here. But hopefully there is. Hopefully there is enough light for this. Hi. My name is Fr. Mike Schmitz and this is Ascension Presents. So I know I always say this, that I work with college students, but I’m always working with people who are asking about God’s will in their lives. Like, I find this across the board, not just college students, but so many of us, we want certainty. We all want certainty when it comes to following God. And we think “OK God. Why isn’t God more clear with what he wants me to do?” “And if he would just… just reveal his will to me, I would totally do it, but why doesn’t God reveal anything to me?” Now, I was thinking about this because I was reading Exodus Chapter 40 just the other day. And it’s the last chapter of the book of Exodus. And what it describes is this: It describes how Moses went to the meeting tent. What happened was, here’s the people of Israel. They are in the wilderness. And Moses, when he says whenever the cloud of glory, the Shekinah cloud, the glory of the Lord, came down upon the tent, then they would go worship. When the cloud, the Shekinah cloud, that glory cloud went up, and then moved, they would follow it. And I was thinking about this, and thinking, OK, so, we look back at the story and we think, “Oh my gosh!” “That would be so great!” Because here’s God being very very clear about “OK. Get up and move now” “Get up and pray now” very very clear! But I was thinking about this. Thinking, wait a second! There were probably days, weeks, maybe months or years where the cloud didn’t move. Where there was no clear indication of “OK, it’s now time to pack up everyone, and now let’s keep wandering in the wilderness” When the cloud just stayed there, or maybe the cloud seemed absent. Now I thought about this. In those moments, there was no certainty, there was no clarity as far as “where should we go now?” In fact, in those moments it was “okay. It’s clear.” The clarity was “stay here”. The certainty was “don’t go anywhere”. But they had to wait. They had to wait for the Lord to say, “OK now, move.” I’ve been thinking about this especially when it comes to discernment. I think a lot of times we say “I want certainty.” or “I want clarity.” What we mean is we want God’s constantly: “Yup. Take another step. HmmHmm.” “Yup. Take another step.” “Take another step.” Constantly kind of like guiding us as opposed to God saying, “Okay, I’m speaking in clarity” Now the reality is this: God is never going to ask you to make decisions based off of what you don’t know. God’s never going to ask you to make decisions with your vocation, what he’s calling you to, based off of what he hasn’t revealed to you. He’s going to ask you to make decisions based off of what you do know, based off of what he has revealed to you. You say, “Well, what has God revealed to me?” Well. He’s revealed to you the commandments. You already know what it is to have an honorable life. He’s revealed to you the truth of the Church. He’s revealed to you the sacraments. He’s revealed to you the Beatitudes. Jesus Christ has revealed to us the way God wants us to live! He wants us to care for each other. He wants us when we fall to go to the confession. He wants us to worship him in the Eucharist at the Mass every single Sunday. Now those are all things that God has clearly revealed to you. You can be absolutely certain, but then people say, “Yeah, but what about more?” Well, here’s the thing. God will never ask you to answer a question that he hasn’t asked you. OK. Where are you going next God? “Don’t worry. I’m not asking you to move anywhere.” Here’s the Shekinah. The glory cloud, right? “I’m not asking you to go anywhere.” “Just stay where you are.” Here’s my invitation for you today is “to be content and confident to live in uncertainty.” Or maybe even a better way to say it is this: To live with a certainty that God has already given you, to live with the clarity that he’s already spoken in. You know what he wants you to do. Micah Chapter 6 said this, You’ve been told a man what is good, and what the Lord requires of you. To do good. To love justice. And to walk humbly with your God. So simple! And so clear! God has already revealed to you. Here’s what you’re supposed to do right now. And when he calls you to move forward, I’m promising you. He will always speak in clarity. And that question will always have confirmation. But it doesn’t mean even when he calls you to the next step, It doesn’t always mean that he’s always going to be saying “and the next step.. and the next step..” Here’s what I mean. This is the last thing. In Chapter 1 of Luke’s Gospel, in one of the most incredible calls in the history of humanity, the angel Gabriel was sent to a town of Nazareth to visit Mary. Gives the whole thing. You know, you’ll conceive, the whole power of the Holy Spirit. The child to be born to you will be called Holy, the Son of the Most High God. Mary says, ultimately, she says, “Be it done unto me according to your word.” And I think this is amazing. Mary, after she asks a clarifying question, which is good. Then she says, “Behold, I’m the handmaiden of the Lord. May it be done unto me according to your word.” The very next line says, “Then the angel departed from her”. Mary ju-…*laugh* It was just revealed to Mary that she was called to be the Mother of God. Whatever that meant!?! And whatever she understood that to mean. But she was clearly asked to do this one thing, to say, to answer this one question. She answered that question and then the angel departed from her. See. We want certainty. But God’s certainty is not “OK. Here’s what you do next. Here’s what you do next. Here’s what you do next.” God’s certainty is “I will be with you.” “I will be with you.” “Take that next step and continue to walk until I tell you to stop.” Take that next step and continue to walk until I tell you to turn. Take that next step and continue to live. Here’s the reality. You know what God wants you to do today. He’s already revealed it. And if he hasn’t revealed to you what he wants you to do with your whole life, then don’t worry. You don’t have to answer a question that God hasn’t asked yet. Our certainty is not that he tells us what to do very single step. Our certainty is that he is with us. And God is with you. From all of us here from Ascension Presents, my name is Fr. Mike. God bless. *whisper* OK. gap gap gap *whisper*

I prayed for answers .. and went online to see what God had to tell me … when I saw this six minute message on the top of the list I was skeptical … surely the Lord had more to tell me than six minutes … but it was exactly what I needed … made me realize that my problems werent all that difficult … and any communication I have had from the Lord has always been brief and to the point … the first time this happened was at one of my lowest points ever … I was on the verge of suicide and prayed and simply asked "What direction should I take Lord?" … my phone rang and the caller ID said "FORWARD". I answered and there was no one there. I tried calling the number back but it said "the number you have dialed has been disconnected or is not in service." … Never before and never again have I seen this on my caller ID … I feel this sermon was Gods way this time of reaffirming what he already told me … "If I want you to move … I will let you know." … Thank you Father Schmitz for this simple yet affirming message. May you continue to bless those who need the word.

Hi Father, I’m currently writing this as a 13 year old. Ever since 4th grade, I’ve had thoughts about the priesthood that have grown more persistent as I’ve aged. I acknowledge that I’m still very young to be thinking about this, but I can’t stop thinking about it. In 4th grade, I thought about it once and the thought went away. In 6th Grade, our class was able to feel the heartbeat of the missionary image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I felt that I had grown closer to God. In 7th Grade, our class took a field trip to our Cathedral and Mass was said Ad Orientem, which was a powerful experience for me. I had also attended a Holy Thursday Mass in which I could just feel the presence of Christ within the Eucharist. Ever since 6th Grade, I’ve prayed constantly and asked for what my vocation was. Many family members have even asked me if I plan to pursue the priesthood. My only worry is that if this is truly my vocation, I’m not sure how my parents would react; I’ve been lucky to drag my father to take me to Mass on Sundays. If I tell them about these recent events, I don’t think they’ll react with open arms. Therefore, I ask you for any advice on this situation and to pray for me as I discern if this is what God wants me to do. Thank you.

I generally do not write comments but I will definitely write for this one. This is one of the best videos and it contains one of the most necessary info for the present generation especially for people like me .If you are confused what to do ? How to live ? Don't be because God has a plan for you the thing you need not know the plan completely . God gives you enough knowledge about what you are doing is good or bad . Don't do the bad things stick to the good things if we continue on doing so one day we will definitely experience his loving presence in our hearts. Also please pray for the priests especially for priests like father mike.

I am a 37 years old I am supossed to be an adult, but I don't know what go do, what decisions I should make. I have prayed a lot I am constantly looking for God in my daily life. I am hopeless and sick and tired.

If you are, you are a hypocrit idolotar and do not believe that anyone can accept jesus and let Jesus blood wash away ones sin without a "priest" sitting in a chair forgiving their sins for them!!!! You are a hypocrit!!!! If you truly love god do not decieve people!!!! The pope is nothing but a man, and the audacity to think that he is the last decendant of Jesus when he shares nothing in common with him!!! Is the pope mortal, yes he is because they always need another one when the last one dies! Did Jesus die and not rise again? No!!! The complete opposite actually happened, he rose on the third day! STOP IT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CALLING YOURSELF FATHER WHEN YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ANYONES SIN!!!! THERe IS ONLY ONE, AND HE IS THE ONE THAT TOOK YOUR PLACE!!!! Ask god for forgiveness for your hypocritism and deciving right now, you have made the good apple rotten in the core!!!

Hi Father Mike, I was brought up Catholic, I went to a Catholic grade school and high school. I loved the unity and regimentation and as a young boy I felt closer to God. I'm older now and I feel guilty for not continuing to go to Church but I've always felt God has always been part of my life. I want to share with you my miracles. My entire life, I, like everyone else have had struggles we have to endure, some of those struggles seemed unbearable and some were worse than others. Every time I thought this is it, I'm going to be homeless, I'm going to lose someone I love, I can't pay my bills, or something terrible is going to happen because of something I did or said, out of the blue I was saved, the problem disappeared, I was forgiven, a check appeared in the mail I never expected to keep me in my home, to buy food or pay my bills. I got the job I needed I never expected and shockingly I beat out 15 people to get it and that happened 3 times, wait, I'm not that smart, how can this happen? It's uncanny, but I always got the help I needed. In spite of my being undeserving in my eyes, God decided to take pity on this stumbling stupid human and bail me out one more time.
I want to go back to church but I'm afraid I'll go and get nothing out of it which was why I stopped going. How can I find a meaning for going to church again? If you're too busy to answer I understand, I will keep persevering. I really enjoy your talks, they make me think and give me hope.

I hoped (and prayed) that asking I would get a response as on Pentecost the Apostles KNEW they were Baptized in the Holy Spirit and were born again, I assume they then took or had already taken a water Baptism. Depending on “Ask and it shall be given” I ask for the Holy Spirit and for confirmation from the Lord, how can you have a “daily walk” or relationship if you are doing all the talking and God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit do not respond in some discernable way to confirm being Born Again much less our daily walk and personal relationship. I hear so many others hear the Lord and actually SEE HIM, walk AND talk, walking IN HEAVEN. I’ll tell you how can I not expect a relationship when so many DO have a very intimate relationship and I can’t get a response on God’s promise? All I can get out of that is something I am doing or not doing is blocking EVERYTHING. Father, do you hear from the Lord directly as so many claim these days? I believe but am getting ZERO guidance from the Holy Spirit. I thought the Holy Spirit teaches us, guides us and brings all things into remembrance.

I just read the 10 commandments and an interesting philosophical thought occurred.

10th commandment = ''do not covet''
What if, we aren't suppose to date/ marry and reproduce? Jesus never did those things and he was sent as an example to the people.
What if god wants us to END ourselves? To no longer reproduce and to eradicate our human race by simply choosing to not exist?
We would be escaping the most powerful instinct we have, an instinct bestowed upon us since Adam and Eve.
Satan made us this way, but you can choose to ignore what he made you!

Think about this! What if instead of waiting around endlessly for thousands and thousands of years, for god to come down from heaven and ''save'' us.
What if we are suppose to go to him?!?!
We can do it!, in less than a century we could be there, all we'd have to do is abstain from sex/ love.
It wouldn't be easy, but it could be done.

Even if this philosophy is wrong, what would god do if this human creation decided to force his hand? A silent god would have to come to life again to either stop it…or he'd have to accept we've changed his predetermined plans for us…or we'd be doing what he really wanted us to do this whole time…which is to reject satan and turn to purity.

    Think about it!

Great vid! Deep prayer and journaling is important during these times of wonder and discernment. The Lord reveals instincts inside of us so we can knock on the right doors when seeking the next step.

Hello Father Mike! Did God create some people to have no true defined vocation/calling in life? I am getting older and feel like a boat without a sail. I try to pray, offer sufferings up etc but it feels like God is stripping (& has been) me of everything I have.. & everything is so difficult in my life. I see people around me that they pray & good things happen. But I pray & generally bad/negative things happen to me that seem to keep me even further from advancing my life… & calling? The weird thing is I love silence so I can be in His presence. Without silence at least a couple times a day, I start to feel overwhelmed & lose my peace. Hope to hear from you! Sorry for the long response. God Bless!

I think I know my calling, only the path is not so clear to me.

I wish for the Lord to give me the courage needed for my journey.

Well who do you ask, someone who pretends to know who thinks they can talk to god, or do you go find what god is and what it has to do with you?

All you self flattering people always answer wrong.

God wants us to repent so he will free people from sin. Then his will becomes clear for what he has for us. Please read John 8:34-36. Sin no more.

I once asked a mistic priest what my vocation was and he got angry with me. I now understand why. When god speaks we dont always listen. God whispers the devil shouts. God tells you whats best for you and sometimes we think we know better, this is another factor.

I looked for the 10 Commandments in the Bible. I don’t think it’s actually in there.
