Why Does Faith Deserve Respect?

Why is faith worthy of so much respect? Would somebody show me the calculations, because I just don’t get it. People keep saying to me, “You should show a bit more respect… … You don’t have to call people mentally ill just because they disagree with you.” Well, it’s not because they disagree with me that I call them mentally ill. It’s because of what they believe about reality, and, more importantly, what they want to do with those beliefs. If that’s all it was, just a belief, then I’d have no problem giving religion all the respect it wants. In the same way that I respect a person’s dress sense, or the decor in their home, even if I found it tasteless, I would respect them enough not to say so. But religion is more than just a belief. Religion wants to impose a universal morality, which is why is has always attracted the kind of person who thinks other people’s private lives are their business. And giving respect to this mentality is exactly what has got us into the mess that we’re in. We’ve given religion ideas above its station, and we’ve persuaded it that it’s something it’s not. The truth is that faith is nothing more than the deliberate suspension of disbelief. It’s an act of will. It’s not a state of grace. It’s a state of choice, because without evidence, you’ve got no reason to believe, apart from your willingness to believe. So why is that worthy of respect, any more than your willingness to poke yourself in the eye with a pencil? And why is faith considered some kind of virtue? Is it because it implies a certain depth of contemplation and insight? I don’t think so. Faith, by definition, is unexamined. So in that sense it has to be among the shallowest of experiences. Yet, if it could, it would regulate every action, word and thought of every single person on this planet, because, let’s not forget, even an impure thought is a sin. Well, I think that belief in God is an impure thought. It pollutes our understanding of reality. It gets in the way, and it brings out the worst in the best of us, so that we’re even prepared to stoop so low as to poison the unformed minds of the people we love the most – our children. By the time they’re old enough to think for themselves, it’s too late. They’ve been well and truly hypnotised. I’m sorry, but there’s no nice way to say this. If you fill your child’s mind with images of Satan and the horrors of hellfire, you’re a sick individual, and you are mentally ill. And the only reason you don’t know this is because you’ve been indulged for far too long by people and institutions that really ought to know better. The truth is your beliefs are infantile, your scriptures are lies, and your gods are illusions. And I can say that with all due respect, because no respect is actually due. Besides, anyone who has to demand respect automatically deserves ridicule. If you deserved respect you’d already have it. You’d be rolling around in it like a televangelist in other people’s money. No, what you deserve is mockery. But I’m a reasonable person, and I want to make an effort, so I’ll tell you what I’ll do. I’ll respect your beliefs for as long as I can keep a straight face while thinking about them, which should be about half a second. But beyond that I’m afraid I can’t promise anything. In the meantime, I don’t believe that God exists, but if it turns out that I’m wrong about that, fair enough. I don’t think much of his attitude, to be honest, and if he wants to show himself, I’d be happy to tell him that to his face, if he’s got one. But if God exists, I want him to tell me himself. I don’t want to hear it from anybody else. And, in case you’re wondering, that includes you. So please don’t quote any more scripture at me. I’m really up to here with scripture, and frankly I don’t give a damn what the Bible or the Koran have to say about anything. You might as well be telling me about your dreams, which is essentially what you are doing. I can understand why people are drawn to scripture and to religion, because it’s so easy and convenient. It’s all laid out for you. All the thinking you’ll ever need has already been done. You don’t have to lift a single braincell. That’s so convenient it’s almost modern. But what you’ve got to realise is that believing a thing, no matter how strongly, doesn’t necessarily make it real. You could be hypnotised into believing that you’re a chicken, but you can’t reasonably expect other people to share that belief, at least until they see a few eggs. And that’s the bottom line here, evidence. If you show me a few eggs, then I will believe that you are a chicken, or a Christian, or a Muslim, or whatever the hell it is that you think you are. But until then, please don’t tell me not to mock your beliefs. That’s like telling me not to laugh at your toupee. It just makes the damn thing even more ridiculous. Peace to everyone, and may you get all the respect that you deserve.

Here is one calculation for you Mr. Condell. "My Kingdom is not of this World". Of course that is beyond your level of understanding. You may be right about organized religion but you are solidly wrong about "Faith".

If you believe in the possibility of parralell universe (s) then you may ought to understand the possibility of a place (or places) that is non-material and that of "Spirit".

Lastly may I tell you that without even a shadow of a doubt "I have seen Christ Jesus" and other things of Spirit you have obviously not. But hey., don't feel bad mate as very few others have been privy to the eternal things either.

    Peace~!

I agree completely. The short answer: faith should NOT be respected, and in fact, should not even be encouraged, because of what you said: respect of faith only ends in mental illness, wars and bloody violence (only have to check the history books for hundreds of examples of proof).

True virtuous faith is a thing that no human possesses. Christ had perfect faith. Our "faith" only counts once and Christ's faith is then transferred to our account once we believe the gospel. You can not find the "evidence" of God's holiness in a Christian life the way "Christians" claim to have the Holy spirit working in them. God does not offer you a changed life, he offers you his perfect record. You have to take him at his word without seeing the "effects" in someone's life, if you needed to see proof that someone had been given a clean record you do not then go to the old record of one's own lifetime and try to use that to proof they now have a clean "life." It's retarded. Even looking at someone's "faith" to see if they've been cleansed is ridiculous. We're given Christ's record. No one needs to be enabled to be virtuous apart from that. Do not listen to people who try to use their "clean" lifestyle as proof of their "faith." It's impossible to please God.

Pat your asking a lot from the religious idiots as far as their concerned proof is only something atheists should provide and prove. there only evidence is the book of fables written over generations by unknown authors, using stories they had been told. these same stories that were not 2nd hand but had been passed on many many times, fk have religious people never played Chinese whispers. even after just a few times a message is passed on it changes dramatically and by the end iis completely different. Religion is for people who have small brains and cant think for themselves, they have been brainwashed over many years. this makes me sad for them.

If religion were to be a human invention, how else would it look but exactly what we have now? God who is supposed to be so powerful is incapable to send a message that all humans would agree with. In fact, God seems to specialise in messages that are so ambiguous, even the believers argue among each other for centuries as to what they mean. God who is supposed to be fair presides over a world where a 5yo child can gets raped and murdered. In the case of Islam, the revelations from god conveniently match the needs of the messenger prophet Muhammad. Such revelations also narrowly fit the society at the time. Most messages from god are never lasting and enduring. They are always context-dependent and self serving to the inner sanctum. Perhaps the funniest part of religious books like the bible and the koran is in the number of contradictions and double standards they hold. They are riddled with it. The most incredible part of the religious fallacy is the diseased minds who believe in god while dismissing a huge body of knowledge in physics, psychology, biology, anthropology and the rest of it, to believe in something that has never gathered a single piece of reliable evidence in thousands of years. Forget all the evidence accumulated to prove evolution. Let's believe in creation for which there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever. Nothing, Nada. The so-called miracles are a tool of deception used by the clergy to keep their position of power over the gullible masses. No wonder they are doing so well in countries where education is low. There has never been a single proven miracle in the history of the world. A real miracle is when you find a spare million transferred to your bank account and the transaction reads "From God with Love".

Hi Pat – first off, love your videos – agree with everything you say. I'm an orthodox Jew. And listening to your most recent talk about faith, I have to point out some problems within your argument. No offense intended, but first off, your conception of faith comes only from your limited experience with Christianity (and a bit from Islam) which are extrapolations (and not particularly good ones) of the original monotheism idea. True monotheism is not about blind faith at all. And it is not anti-reality or anti-science either. Quite the opposite in fact. Of course we have no proof in God. Because in true monotheism God is infinite. If we stop to think about that for a moment, this means there is nothing else at all. Proof can only be examined when you are able to differentiate between 2 separate physicalities: For example, evidence for water is only relevant when you can point to an absence of water. So proof is out of the question here. And to be honest – it would defeat the purpose of life anyway – as I will explain below. An infinite God also means that it is perfect in every way since it lacks nothing. It therefore needs nothing from us – not our worship and certainly not our prayers. So it seems that creation and by extension, faith must be somehow for our own, exclusive benefit. What good would it do me if there were obvious proof of God? It would leave me as a robot – with no free choice and no room for personal growth. The universe is set up according to a certain pattern (which we learn about in Judaism) and with certain rules and both a cyclical and linear progression to history. A sensitive mind, with a little knowledge, will be able to pick up on this pattern within our environment and our lives. We are then faced with a choice – to ignore the 'hints' and 'indications' of God. Or to try to act within them. And by the way, this is a completely personal choice – nobody can determine through dogma or coercion whether you choose to see God within the pattern of the world or decide that its all just by chance. However, in true monotheism our task is to recognize that God is hidden within himself, then build this sensitivity into our environment and our behavior and our interactions with others. Just like the natural world is about growth, so our life task is about growth. Its not about escaping the physical world to some imagined better place – or heaven (as our Islamic friends believe) – its about imbuing the physical WITH the spiritual through sensitivity and effort. Like everything in life, there's no escaping honest hard work! And in the process we learn about the meaning of real happiness – that is, when we see our efforts bear fruit – when we make this world a better place for all of us to live in. Just like God is One, true spirituality is about making humanity One, through unconditional love and peace. But this is where the flower-power generation got it wrong – love and peace requires understanding, effort, self-control and character building – all hard work. The physical – both our own and the world's must be tamed and shaped by human creativity – which is why we are in the 'image' of God. Just like God creates, our task is also to create and improve – through scientific advance, through art, medicine, law and all the tools at our disposal. This is true spiritualism – (and also explains why Jews have won so many Nobel prizes). That was the essential 'eureka' that Abraham, the founder of monotheism discovered – and it is that concept that set Judaism away from the many other forms of spiritualism that existed in ancient times, setting it on a path that set the stage for Western civilization as we know it. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, Christianity and Islam diluted and lost much of that original raison d'etre. Hope this helps to begin a new train of though! Happy to continue the discussion any time! Regards, Sam.

This man, who has made many observant comments on matters of importance, shares a serious flaw with many other arrogant atheists: He assumes that a belief he doesn't hold is therefore contemptible. (Compare this to the behavior of the apostles of “global warming.”) Make no mistake: that's Condell's attitude toward persons who hold religious beliefs.

Religious convictions are neither provable nor disprovable. That's their nature. Therefore, the atheist determined to exalt himself over theists can only slather them with contempt. But ask one to prove that God doesn't exist, and he'll get huffy: “I don't have to!” A perfectly adequate rejoinder is: "But you’re the one denigrating me. If you can’t prove your contention, I don’t need to listen to you." Simply smile, and walk away.

Faith is believing in the controller.
Respect every word you spoke here Pat.
So easy to move to another religion or system
    and fool yourself yet again.
Stopping with atheism is not enough tho
dropping religion because you see clearly that it is a waste of a time/life.
    Or false.
Every human holds the key but thought based org relig. blocks it,
even atheism or being agnostic is not the answer.
There is an intelligence, another level in the human
but thought plays no part in it.
ie it's not contaminated by thought.
Time does not exist either psychologically; tho the clock is ticking.
Also thought is a controller;;; you can see this in yourself.
Only an awareness when thought butts in
and thought being a controller is like the village bully
    always muscling its way in.
Thought is our problem; it has occupied the brain with trash.
    and never stfu.

Now i notice the ''God bless Atheism'' vid. Oh dear.

I'm an atheist and agree with you on why religion is bad, etc. And although people don't deserve respect because they are believers in a religion, they don't deserve mockery or scorn because of it either. You wouldn't mock a moron would you, someone with limited mental capacity? Now, admittedly, there ARE some religious people who do deserve scorn, particularly the most strident, the hypocrites, the scammers, etc. But not the average person who happens to believe because they were brainwashed from birth or those that use it as a crutch to help them survive some terrible condition in their life. You closed the video with your usual, "Peace", but this time you added "…to all." That doesn't come across as genuine.

What is said here is probably true of Abrahamanic religions. In other cultures the concept of religion is not such a straightjacket.

Nahum Goldmann lived his whole life as one of the top level international Zionists, he was the president of the World Jewish Congress from 1947 to 19788, and in his 1915 book "The Spirit Of Militarism" he describes the Zionist method for destruction of Western Civilization. Below is an English translation from the copy housed in the collection of the Leo Baeck Institute. "The historical mission of our world revolution is to rearrange a new culture of humanity to replace the previous social system. This conversion and re-organization of global society requires two essential steps: firstly, the destruction of the old established order, secondly, design and imposition of the new order. The first stage requires elimination of all frontier borders, nationhood and culture, public policy ethical barriers and social definitions, only then can the destroyed old system elements be replaced by the imposed system elements of our new order. The first task of our world revolution is Destruction. All social strata and social formations created by traditional society must be annihilated, individual men and women must be uprooted from their ancestral environment, torn out of their native milieus, no tradition of any type shall be permitted to remain as sacrosanct, traditional social norms must only be viewed as a disease to be eradicated, the ruling dictum of the new order is; nothing is good so everything must be criticized and abolished, everything that was, must be gone. The forces preserving traditional society are "free market capitalism" in the social economic realm, and "democracy" in the mental political realm. The capitalist free market does not fight against the old economic order, nor does democracy lead a fierce hot battle against the forces of reaction which oppose the new order, therefore our transformative work will be imposed through the unifying principle of the militaristic spirit, the negative task of destroying the old established order will be completely solved and finished only when the all the human masses are all forcibly collectivized as uniformed soldiers under imposed mass-conformity of new order culturing. After destruction of the old order, construction of the new order is a larger and more difficult task. We will have torn out the old limbs from their ancient roots in deep layers, social norms will be lying disorganized and anarchic so they must be blocked against new cultural forms and social catagories naturally re-emerging. The general masses will have been first persuaded to join as equals in the first task of destroying their own traditional society and economic culture, but then the new order must be forcibly established through people again being divided and differentiated only in accordance with the new pyramidal hierarchical system of our imposed global monolithic new world order. Capitalism must be condemned as a fundamental misfortune caused by the wealth of capitalist power exploiting the false separation between the high rulers and the oppressed exploited masses. The masses must be induce to repudiate the concept of personal wealth and personal rights, this second task will also be solved only by virtue of the great guiding principle of the subordinating militaristic spirit in which superior ranks impose order on inferiors, new world order: "which will bring the true aristocratic principle of "might is right" in the those who can rule – shall rule".“Esau-Edom is modern Jewry” 1925 Jewish Encyclopedia, Vol. 5 page 41. “Strictly speaking, it is incorrect to call an ancient Israelite a Jew or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or Hebrew.” Jewish Almanac 1980. “Some call it communism, I call it Judaism.” Rabbi Stephen Weiss. “Anti-Communism is Anti-Semitism.” Jewish Voice, July – August 1941.?

Pat – as usual, hitting the nail on the head again 🙂 It's beyond time for faith to be seen for what it is. How faith has escaped scrutiny for so long is a mystery to me. Bravo Pat!

Religions have to be within the bound of reason: No real MIRACLES/ no superstitions / all heritage books histrocized/ symbolized .

We have to reconcile religions with science and base theology on philosophical ideas that meet the EPISTOMOLOGY of our time!!!

Does this mean you also have no respect for other cultures? I'm an atheist, so I'm not having you on, I just wonder why you would differentiate a religion from a culture.

They don't like that moment of doubt that occurs when someone doesn't respect their religious belief. So weak minded they need to meet in a place to be with others that reconfirms and pushes out any doubt.

Faith is dishonesty it deserves no respect. Faith is the denial of reality. All the faith in the world is the equivalent of nothing. Life after death is an oxymoron, you can’t be alive after
you have died because that would mean you have not died in the first place. Death after life is as proven as a thing can possibly be proven. It is as proven as 1 + 1 = 2. Biological creatures die when they die, not live. Magic isn’t real nor is it a valid world view. Faith is the game of the cowardly death denier. They have no self respect.

    OF COURSE GOD EXISTS!
Proof? Very simple. Where could the whole universe and everything in it otherwise come from? And dead matter can not organize itself into a world with plants, animals and humans. You need an infinite intelligence to do that. The only logical explanation is the existance of God. And God even showed himself and walked the earth for 33 years in the second person of His divinity: Jesus Christ! All other answers are attempts to bent reality out of pride. Not enough? Then there is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, proving Christ is God. The 12 apostels, His Holy Mother Mary testified that that Christ is God and that Christ resurrected. And all twelve apostels died as a martyr because they testified to that. And 500 people saw the resurrected Christ (1Cor15v6). Obviously, as the Bible states, you need a grace to see these truths. How can you get such a grace? Simply get a Green Scapular (https://youtu.be/AV_iix7eEbk), buy one at Amazon, get it blessed by a Catholic priest and carry it with you or keep it in your house. Then the grace will be given to you. Coz of the grace you will ask God foregiveness for your sins and He will foregive you your sins. Christ always does. Only without sin you can enter Heaven. Its as simple as that. Of course you can chose not to do so. Then you choose hell for all eternity. If you think this is a difficult choice, you very badly need the Green Scapular.
    Good luck and God bless!

I have a RIGHT to have my beliefs respected and as long as I keep them private and as long as they are within the bound of REASON RECONCILED at its BASIC tenets with SCIENCE/ EPISTOMOLOGY.

That's why WE ALL SHOULD ban EVAGELISM esp CHRISTIAN EVAGELISM. It is dogmatic/ VINDICTIVE/ Sectarian
And claim ownership OVER and monopoly of TRUTH . CHRISTIAN evangelicals esp WESTERN ones enjoy using CHRISTIAN EVAGELISM for discrediting all philosophies EASTERN, demonizing and dehumanizing Ppl from EASTERN cultures
Just BECAUSE they happened to be HISTORICALLY NON-CHRISTIAN cultures/ Geophraphies.

JESUS CHRIST IS not PEACE at least what has been done in his NAME . And this person seem to me an ALLEGORICAL PERSON imagine by some ppl . HUMANITY can't be divided over ancient MYTHS because it was embraced by certain GROUP of ppl in a specific Geography.

Try this for STUPID IN GIANT LETTERS: Break this scripture down and it TELLS you what a crock of shite FAITH is: Hebrews 11:1 " Faith is the SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR; the EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN"
That passage, broken down and deciphered into it's two basic statements says clearly, that, having faith is just hoping for a particuar thing, and the presence of faith merely means you're looking for invisible things. Read it, you blind, accepting Christian's! Your Bible tells you, in essence your faith is proof of nothing…

You've been indoctrinated with an atheistic worldview . Your worldview dogma states your brain was formed by pure chance from swamp mud, with no design, a fluke clump of cells that evolved in a monkey's head, thats the basis of your intellect. On that basis, your claim of knowing any truth …fails.
